He was an important mentor to Shoehorn in his earliest years of performing, the two having met each other at the legendary Key West jazz club Captain Hornblower's, owned and operated by licensed captain and trumpet player Danny Knowles.Donato and Shoehorn have remained in touch over the years, occasionally reuniting for shows in South Florida when Shoehorn tours there in winter. Mr. Donato is an entertainer extraordinaire, with a thorough knowledge of classic jazz, from the swing of Jimmy Dorsey and Bobby Darin to the Charlie Parker canon, Caribbean styles, and the great American songbook. He has a rich baritone voice and a beautiful, singing sound on the saxophone. His wife Kathleen joins the band, bringing her melodic interpretations to the mix. Here in Portland they will join Shoehorn's Hatband, featuring the mighty talents of Dan Gaynor on piano, a first-call accompanist to the likes of Nancy King, Glen Moore, Bob Mover, Rob Scheps, Bobby Torres and David Valdez. Mr. Gaynor can be heard on Shoehorn releases "Cafe Cirque", a studio set, and the live document "The Blue Monk".
