Mr. Shoehorn's Hatband

Tony Starlight's, 3728 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, OR

Tony Starlight's is an old-school supper club with an intimate showroom with a red velvet stage curtain, a grand piano and a vintage drum set on a riser. These gigs always feature Shoehorn tap dancing, playing sax and percussion and singing, plus at least one special guest on the bill; generally other talents drift in to throw down a couple of numbers as well. In August this sit-in group included percussionists Martin Zarzar and Doug Smith of Pink Martini fame. This month, Mr. Shoehorn's special guest will be singer/songwriter/instrument maker James Cook, who is the leader of popular local band Trashcan Joe. The two have worked together in various productions going back to the Wanderlust Circus' production of Alice in Wonderland in April 2009. Mr. Cook's tunes hearken to a bygone era with memorable melodies and adroitly-worded lyrics which speak to our present times as well. His instrument of choice is his Trashcanjo, a tenor banjo fashioned from galvanized metal trash cans. He also plays a large repertoire of classic American songs and will play on some of Mr. Shoehorn's originals. This is a rare chance to hear him backed by tap dancing sax man Shoehorn and the Hatband, featuring pianist Ezra Weiss, bassist Dan Schulte, and drummer Ward Griffiths, all in the cozy environs of Tony Starlight's!
